Visiting postdoc position

in Advanced Mobile Technologies and Services

SEPTEMBER 2009. We offer a visiting position for a Ph.D. with a solid background in wireless technologies and/or in the development of communication services. The researcher will work in several on-going projects (e.g. AmIVital, amivital.ugr.es; MADRINET, madrinet.org; PIRAMIDE, piramidepse.com and some others), which aim at developing context-aware services (highly adaptive to the user’s situation and profile). In particular, some of these services will focus on providing innovative tourism experiences (e.g. augmented reality), and support to Personal Health and Ambient Assisted Living for elderly and disabled people.  A brief explanation of the projects above is available here .

THE RESEARCH GROUP

GPDS-Ceditec (ceditec.org) is the Data Processing and Simulation Group (grpss.ssr.upm.es), a Research Unit of the Technical University of Madrid (UPM, upm.es), hosted by the School of Telecommunications Engineering (ETSIT, etsit.upm.es). It is composed by twenty-five people (6 PhD – professors, 3 contracted researchers, 1 postdoc visitor, 1 visiting professor, 8 PhD candidates and 6 undergrads). Starting in 1982, the Research Unit has a long story of successful projects with industry and in research cooperation as well. Among its corporate partners, there are companies such as Telefónica I+D, Indra, Siemens, Aena, Boeing, Orange, Eurocontrol, Telvent, CRIDA, Thales and others.

Current research activity of the Data Processing and Simulation Group includes:

-          Architectures for context-aware frameworks.

-          Data fusion techniques for reasoning and decision support.

-          Context modelling using semantic technologies.

-          Indoor positioning algorithms.

-          Wireless ad-hoc and sensor networks: positioning and energy efficient routing.

-          Technologies for the Internet of Things: light mobile architectures and multimodal interfaces.

-          Design and implementation of context-aware services for healthcare and support to independent living.

-          Design and implementation of context-aware services for tourism.

-          Security and privacy in context-aware systems.

-          Forecasting and technology watch in mobile services and technologies.

 CANDIDATE PROFILE

-          Ph. D. degree in Telecommunications or in related areas (Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, etc.)

-          Proven track record in ICT areas related with wireless or mobile applications. Alternatively, deep background in related basic areas of knowledge.

-          Keen for high-level R&D and university academic activity.

-          Proven ability to communicate and lead teams.

It would be highly considered any theoretical and practical experience in some of the latest communication technologies, in architectures or in the development of applications for the provision of mobility services. Although not strictly required, the following added expertise will be of interest: Programming languages (such as Java, NesC, C, C++…), statistics and signal processing, simulation techniques, mobile programming, Linux, architectures and protocols for wireless sensor networks.

WE OFFER:

-          Full time job, 10 months contract.

-          Working within a multidisciplinary group of recognized scientific and technical competence.

-          Research promotion and participation in international forums.

-          Continuous contact with companies and external institutions.
